Jorge Nocedal is Walter P. Murphy Professor, Northwestern University. He studied a Bachelor’s degree in physics at the National University of Mexico and a Ph.D. in mathematics at Rice University. He is well known for his work on L-BFGS, an optimization algorithm in the family of quasi-Newton methods that approximates the Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno. Another outstanding contribution is his participation in the development of Artelys Knitro, a commercial software package for solving large scale nonlinear mathematical optimization problems. Nocedal’s current research interests are still focused on optimization and its application in machine learning and in disciplines involving differential equations.
